Traffic Light Eating!

21 January 2019

At the end of 2018 we were introduced to Traffic Light Eating.
It teaches you so much about food and it's simple!

Traffic Light Eating:
-GREEN foods: Always a go! Have as much as you'd like!
-YELLOW foods: Great in moderation. Focus on portion control!
-RED foods: STOP. IT doesn't necessarily mean no, it just means to stop and think.. is it worth it?

It dawned on me that this is such a great way to explain and teach the kiddos about food. It honestly gets exhausting sometimes when they ask for certain types of foods and the answer is always no. And really.. I just never knew the right way to teach them and explain to them WHY they can’t have 10 cookies 3 times a day.

So.. insert traffic light eating! It’s been amazing! If your children are like ours.. they are constantly asking for snacks or something to eat. If it’s a window in the day when it’s not necessarily time for them to eat.. then we encourage them to pick out a green light food (mostly fruits and veggies). On another note.. Let’s say they had a donut or ice cream earlier in the day and then later they want a cookie or something else unhealthy, we can explain to them, “Hey! Remember the donut earlier? Since we already had a red light food today.. let’s pick something else. How about a peach yogurt?” It’s been amazing! They understand and instead of them being upset because I’m saying no again.. they get to step up and take control of the situation and make their own choice!

Check out our latest video! Aubrey explains more in detail about what this looks like!
